CF Koehler is the president of KKC Inc. His apprenticeship began under his father, CF Sr., in the 1970s. Many years of dedication to the art of boat building were formative in creating one of the world’s master boatbuilders. His years spent on the water show his skills as a licensed professional mariner. Under his direction, Koehler Kraft offers a unique combination of the best traditional skills and modern techniques and technology.

Our History

Clarence Koehler Sr. moved the yard to its current Shelter Island location in 1952.

Koehler Kraft Company (originally Mercury Marine) was founded in 1938 as a builder of a popular line of mahogany sport fishing boats and racing runabouts.

In 1956, Koehler Kraft built the first San Diego Harbor patrol and rescue boat. At the time, this ultra-modern craft boasted radar and fire-fighting capabilities with a top speed of over 40 knots. (still faster than the current fleet)

Since its founding in 1938, Koehler Kraft has built a legendary reputation for craftsmanship, integrity, and attention to detail. What began as a small family boatyard has grown into one of San Diego’s most respected names in the maritime community, trusted by generations of boat owners. Whether restoring a classic yacht, performing routine maintenance, or custom-building a new vessel, Koehler Kraft approaches every project with the same commitment to quality and pride in workmanship. Their legacy isn’t just in the boats they’ve built and cared for—it’s in the relationships they’ve forged and the standard of excellence they continue to uphold today.
